A Guide to Downtown Libertyville: Shopping, Dining & Events

June 2, 2026

Closeup of hand filling up beer with tapHappening upon an idealistic small town in the suburbs of Chicago just hits different these days. Libertyville and its downtown are a rare spot about 30 miles north of Chicago, where the buildings still look like they did a hundred years ago.

Known for its excellent coffee and thriving small businesses, Libertyville has a great sense of community and a genuine love of supporting one another. All the best boutiques, restaurants, and shops are on one long walkable street, where you can easily hit up many of them in one day.

Long-time residents have been fans of these places since the 90s, but some people are just rolling through and discovering Libertyville’s excellence. Here’s our guide to downtown Libertyville and the best it has to offer.

Shopping and Dining in Downtown Libertyville

Thankfully, to the locals, you’re not going to find very many chain stores in Libertyville. It’s known as a boutique town, and people come to shop here for exactly that reason. No matter what you’re looking for, Libertyville will have it. Saturated with businesses that have been around for 30-plus years, it’s the pride of Lake County and is described as such by its residents. optionpremier.com says, “Known for its award-winning schools, walkable Main Street, and scenic lakes, Libertyville isn’t just a bedroom community — it’s a destination where families grow, professionals thrive, and weekends feel like vacations.”

You could not starve in Libertyville if you tried; the dining scene is well known in the suburbs as one of the towns that’s doing it right. They have everything you might be craving, from craft breweries to ramen spots and late-night pizza.

A huge anchor for the town is Mickey Finn’s Brewery, which you will see mentioned on a ton of other Libertyville guides. Open since 1994, it holds the title of Lake County’s oldest brew pub. Visitlakecounty.org advises that “this landmark, casual, social gathering place famous for handcrafted beer is Lake County’s first brewpub. Mickey Finn’s has won a trophy case full of national and international awards for their beer. The menu offers a variety of items, including burgers, pizza, fish ‘n’ chips, and buffalo wings.”

If beer is not your thing, there are also coffee shops on seemingly every corner. One of the newest local shops is called Frunchroom Collective, which is aiming to be the town’s third space. Lakecounty.org has reported on its opening, stating “The 4,000-square-foot facility is designed to facilitate this gathering mindset. It features couches and comfortable seating to encourage customers to ‘stay awhile,” according to Emily Draper, the shop’s coffee and hospitality manager. The layout includes two distinct rooms—one sports-themed and one resembling a den—which will be available for rent or daily use.” For Libertyville, this is typical. There’s always something new opening, and the originals just keep getting better and better.

Events and Things to Do in Downtown Libertyville

You might be thinking that since it’s not a very large city, there might not be a ton of things to do. The truth is, if you thought that, you would be sleeping in Libertyville. Here’s our short list of recurring events in Libertyville, highlighting what is worth making time to attend.

First Fridays: Happening once a month, all the shops stay open late and offer discounts for the night-owl shoppers. It’s a fun, low-commitment activity that you can always count on after payday.

The Farmers Market: I know, every town thinks they have the best farmers market, but for Libertyville, it’s actually true. It’s a local institution, and it runs on Thursdays from May 28th through October, and has been a pillar of the community for 45 years. One-stop shop for all your fresh produce, flour, and baked goods needs.

Libertyville Days: Similar to a county fair, the Libertyville Days are an annual blowout. The 2026 theme is Star Stripes and Libertyville Nights and will run June 18th through 21. If you’ve been craving a foot-long corn dog, now’s your chance. The festival will have live music, carnival rides, a beer garden, and lots of arts and crafts. Don’t miss the parade that’s kicking off at 10 a.m. from the metro station and heading south down Milwaukee Avenue.

What really makes Libertyville so iconic isn’t really just one single shop or one amazing brewery. The community that surrounds Libertyville makes you want to stay there for life. It all works together and is one of the most accessible and walkable suburbs in the state. They have nailed the preservation of history, and as you walk down its streets, you know how much they care about it.

So whether you’re thinking about moving there, coming to visit one of the many specialty shops, or attending an event, just know that Libertyville will deliver.
